Orthopedic Coding:

Consider Alternate Terms For This Synovitis Dx

Question: Encounter notes indicate that the surgeon treated a patient with “synovitis, toxic/wrist.” I cannot find an ICD-10 code to match this condition. Can you help?

Answer: You’re not going to find toxic synovitis in any of the descriptors for the code you’ll use. That’s because toxic synovitis is listed as an alternate term for the code set where you’ll find your diagnosis: M67.3- (Transient synovitis).

Do this: Go back and check the notes to see if the surgeon indicated the laterality of the synovitis. Then, choose from the following ICD-10 codes:

  • M67.331 (Transient synovitis, right wrist)
  • M67.332 (Transient synovitis, left wrist)
  • M67.339 (Transient synovitis, unspecified wrist).
