Ob-Gyn Coding:

What to Do for ‘Hydrocele Repair for a Female’

Question: I haven’t had any luck finding a code for hydrocele repair for a female. What is it, and what should I report?

Minnesota Subscriber

Answer: There is no specific code for this. A hydrocele in a female refers to a fluid-filled sac that can develop in the inguinal canal. This happens when a small pouch of the peritoneum does not close completely during fetal development. This can cause a fluid-filled cyst in the groin area.

You should report the unlisted code 58999 (Unlisted procedure, female genital system (nonobstetrical)) if the repair is done as an open procedure or 49329 (Unlisted laparoscopy procedure, abdomen, peritoneum and omentum) if it is done laparoscopically. You should compare the work to 55040 (Excision of hydrocele; unilateral).
