Question: I just want to confirm something. At our podiatry practice (provider not facility), we scan patients for custom-molded orthotics. Can we bill for the actual scanning? Minnesota Subscriber Answer: Yes, many commercial payers will reimburse you for the process of scanning for custom-molded orthotics if you are referring to fitting patients for L3000 (Foot, insert, removable, molded to patient model, āUCBā type, Berkeley Shell, each). You can add the CPTĀ® code 29799 (Unlisted procedure, casting or strapping) to the claim twice with modifiers RT (Right side) and LT (Left side) and a note in box 19 that says, ācasting for custom functional foot orthotics, bilateralā to help prove medical necessity. Remember: Keep in mind that orthotics should be billed out on the date they are dispensed to the patient. Lindsey Bush, BA, MA, CPC, Development Editor, AAPC
